Airport Transfers & Getting Around
Ancona Airport (AOI) in Falconara Marittima is located roughly 18 km west of central Ancona:
- Direct Train (Aeroporto di Castelferretti to Ancona Centrale): The Castelferretti railway station is located right outside the airport terminal. Direct Trenitalia regional trains take roughly 15–20 minutes to reach central Ancona and cost around €2.50 to €3.00 each way.
- Airport Shuttle Bus (Aerobus Raffaello): Connects the terminal directly with Piazza Cavour and Ancona railway station in about 30 minutes for around €5.50.
- Car Hire: If you want to explore the coastal towns of Sirolo, Numana, and the hills of Le Marche, car rentals from Ancona Airport are very affordable during October.
Suggested 4-Day / 3-Night Itinerary
Day 1 (Wednesday 21st Oct): Early Arrival, Historic Port & Cathedral Vistas
- Land at Ancona Airport at 09:50 AM and take the 15-minute train straight to central Ancona.
- Drop your bags, grab an authentic morning espresso and fresh cornetto, and head up Guasco Hill to the Romanesque Cattedrale di San Ciriaco for sweeping views over the Adriatic Sea and harbour.
- Walk down past the 2nd-century Roman Arch of Trajan and along the historic port walls.
- Dine on authentic stoccafisso all’anconetana (traditional slow-braised salt cod with potatoes and tomatoes) paired with local Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi white wine.
Day 2 (Thursday 22nd Oct): The Dramatic Conero Riviera (Sirolo & Numana)
- Morning: Catch a regional bus or drive 25 minutes south to Sirolo, a cliffside medieval village perched directly over the turquoise sea.
- Afternoon: Walk down the scenic trails through Parco del Conero to pristine pebble beaches like Due Sorelle or Spiaggia San Michele, framed by towering white limestone cliffs.
- Evening: Enjoy fresh seafood pasta and a glass of Rosso Cònero red wine in Sirolo’s cliff-edge piazza as the sun sets over the coast.
Day 3 (Friday 23rd Oct): Underground Grottoes or Hilltop Fortresses
- Morning: Take a day trip to the world-renowned Frasassi Caves (Grotte di Frasassi), one of Europe’s largest subterranean karst cave systems, located under an hour inland.
- Afternoon: Alternatively, visit the Renaissance town of Urbino or explore the charming fortified hilltop villages of Jesi and Offagna.
- Evening: Head back to Ancona for an evening aperitivo and cicchetti along the lively bars around Piazza del Plebiscito (Piazza del Papa).
Day 4 (Saturday 24th Oct): Passetto Cliffs, Monument & Late Flight Home
- Check out, store your luggage, and head to the Passetto Monument. Take the coastal path or cliff elevator down to the historic fishermen’s caves (grotte del Passetto) carved directly into the rocks.
- Enjoy a long, relaxed seaside lunch featuring brodetto all’anconetana (local rich seafood stew).
- Pick up your bags and take the evening transfer back to Ancona Airport for your 21:50 Ryanair flight, landing back at Stansted by 23:10.
